Vice Dean of Barrett, The Honors College
Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University seeks an experienced leader for the position of Vice Dean. The Vice Dean works with the Dean as the primary overseers, planners and caretakers of the 7,200-student honors college.

Barrett Honors College is a selective residential college within Arizona State University with a separate application process that is an option for academically-motivated students after acceptance into ASU (see https://barretthonors.asu.edu). Named one of the top honors colleges in the nation by several reviews and "the gold standard for honors colleges" by the NY Times, Barrett comprises what by many measures of academic quality are the top 10% of the undergraduate students at ASU. There is a Barrett community on each of the four ASU campuses in the Phoenix area, with the largest at Tempe, and each offers what is called "the best of both worlds": the caring and support of a residential college coupled with the vast resources of one of the nation's largest public universities. That combination attracts large numbers of gifted students: Barrett has one of the highest success rates in the country with nationally-competed scholarships such as Fulbright, Marshall, Goldwater, Udall, Schwarzman, Mitchell and Boren. Furthermore, Barrett students move on to the top professional schools and graduate programs in the nation after graduation.

Arizona State University is a new model for American higher education, an unprecedented combination of academic excellence, entrepreneurial energy and broad access. It serves more than 90,000 students in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, the nation's fifth largest city. ASU champions intellectual and cultural diversity, and welcomes students from all fifty states and more than one hundred nations across the globe. ASU has been advancing for the last 15 years under President Michael Crow, adding 5 Nobel Prize winners and multiple National Academy members to its faculty, at least 50 new building projects to its facilities, and entirely new academic schools and colleges. This expansion has resulted in large increases in federal and private grants and national and international accolades (see https://about.asu.edu/rankings) including the "#1 Most Innovative" university in the nation for three straight years awarded by US News.

The Vice Dean of Barrett oversees the honors curriculum, both as provided by the 42 Barrett honors faculty themselves and as provided by the almost 2000 faculty from the larger ASU who contribute honors courses, contracts and thesis direction to the honors students each year. The Vice Dean interacts directly with the honors faculty on all four campuses, overseeing teaching and research allocation of time and space, faculty governance issues and faculty community-building. The Vice Dean builds programs to address student needs for research opportunities and funding, and co-leads the College Inclusion initiatives. The Vice Dean also steps in and represents the college at many university events and committee meetings, and operates the college when the Dean is away on college business.

The ideal candidate will be a tenured faculty member with a PhD with experience with honors students and honors programs. S(he) will have the ability to articulate a compelling vision for a culture of academic excellence and the skill to engage the honors and university communities around this vision. S(he) must have experience supervising a staff and the ability to develop collegial and productive relationships across the university.

Nominations, expressions of interest and applications (CV, letter of interest and contact information for three professional references) should be sent to: BarrettViceDeanSearch@asu.edu. Questions about the position may be addressed to Dean Mark Jacobs, at the same email address. To receive full consideration, applications should be received by February 19, 2018. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. It is expected that the Vice Dean will be appointed by the middle of April 2018.

Arizona State University is a VEVRAA Federal Contractor and an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other basis protected by law.

AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply. ASU is a tobacco-free university. For details visit http://www.asu.edu/tobaccofree.
