General Statement
This position is part of a technical team that is responsible for the system administration of Windows and Linux servers managed by the Systems group. This position works closely with members of multiple UIT groups in the planning, deployment and support of the VDI environment. The system administrator in this position may be on-call periodically and could be required to respond to emergency situations at all hours of the day and night.

Duties and Responsibilities

Server Support
  • Provide system administration for production and non-production servers managed by the systems group in support of the VDI environment.
  • Configure, Install, and support new servers, and/or storage infrastructure including all patches and updates in accordance with UIT Change Management practices.
  • Monitor performance and security and assess system functionality and integrity.
  • Maintain backups and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with security requirements.
  • VDI Environment Planning & Support
  • Work with VDI pool managers to establish and maintain consistent and reliable images.
  • Work with users to add/remove AppVolumes apps.
  • Ensure capacity, performance, and security of back-end compute and storage infrastructure.
  • Consultation
  • Provide server system component consulting for departments and the MSU enterprise including the planning and designing of hardware, software, and integration needs as related to the VDI environment.
  • Assist with the analysis and troubleshooting of performance and potential security issues.
  • Provide telephone, e-mail, and level two Help Desk ticket system support.
  • Security Responsibility
  • Follow information security best practices and abide by University security policies and the guidance of the Information Security Group.
  • Positively communicate and encourage security best practices throughout campus.
  • Assess information security needs and recommend best practices among customers, including proactively asking questions to determine security needs and recommending solutions in accordance with University security policies and the guidance of the Information Security Group.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    1. Bachelor's degree in a technology related field (such as computer science/engineering, information technology etc.) or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
    2. Experience administering, deploying, and supporting Virtual Desktop Infrastructure back-end technology such as: VMware vSphere, vCenter, Application Virtualization, VMotion, and Horizon View; Cisco UCS, Pure Storage, Fiber Channel/iSCSI storage systems or similar server and storage environments.
    3. Experience supporting and administering system patches and updates in a 24X7 production environment.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    1. Experience with security-related policies and guidelines; knowledge of security best practices and typical business requirements and functions associated with security practices.
    2. Direct hands-on experience administering Cisco UCS and, VMware ESXi, vCenter, View/Horizon, Pure Storage systems.
    3. Experience with various scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, Python, Perl, etc.
