JOB SUMMARY

The UX Designer is an essential part of the new User Experience (UX) team at UCSC. Together with the UX Manager, Service Designer and UX Researcher, they will help IT Services deliver more effective services to the university, and create experiences that are usable, useful, and easy to use.

The UX Designer works co-creatively to design a digital landscape that considers the holistic experience of our staff, faculty, and students. They will ensure that our online systems are intuitive, and create engaging interfaces that improve user experience. 

They will collaborate with service teams and stakeholders to conduct usability testing, create wireframes, mock-ups and prototypes, and contribute to the development of UI for projects and applications. They may also work on larger UCSC projects outside IT Services in a consultant role.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $84,200 - $105,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Design
  • Creates moderately complex prototypes and user interfaces (UI) for digital materials, websites, and web-based applications.
  • Contributes to brand and identity systems of the university and ensures that UIs align with UCSC branding guidelines and user experience standards. 
  • Guides the information architecture and taxonomy of websites, service catalogs, and knowledge bases.  
  • Creates user flows, current state diagrams, prototypes, and other UX artifacts.
  • Creates the visual look and feel for user interface components and page layout.

20% - Research
  • Plans and analyzes complex user research. 
  • Conducts complex usability and heuristic evaluations for small to medium projects. Conducts other user research such as ethnographic or field research, user interviews, and surveys. 
  • Identifies key insights from research, and recommends and implements design changes.

20% - Facilitation
  • Plans and facilitates co-design working sessions with cross-functional teams. 
  • Advises various stakeholders on user-centered and accessible practices.
  • Guides teams through the tools and best practices of user experience design.

20% - Advocacy  
  • Promotes user-centered design practice, mindset, and methods through presentation, collaboration, and training. 
  • Participates in developing and maintaining design standards, processes, best practices, training, and resources that build user experience design capability throughout the organization.
  • Participates in UCSC and UC System design communities and discussions.

ITS Security Statement

Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge of design principles such as human-centered design, visual design, interface design, interaction design, content design, and/or graphic design.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing user experience design best practices and guidelines in websites, software, and other interfaces.
  • Experience with UX design methods and artifacts such as usability testing, user interviews, diary studies, ethnographic studies, personas, journey maps, task flows, etc.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and requirements into insights and easy to understand visualizations and artifacts.
  • Experience with diagramming, wireframing, prototyping and using design tools.
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving skills, to work with ambiguity and complex problems and to create new methods and practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills to communicate effectively at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team, and meet deadlines.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility (ADA and WCAG standards), and digital equity and access.
  • Experience facilitating co-design sessions with cross-functional teams.
  • Agile.
  • Lean / Six Sigma.
