Overview

Technology Services serves the university by providing access to high quality, state-of-the-art, computing, communications and information resources through the Internet, local and wide area networks, databases and libraries, and by supporting the management information needs of the university



This position provides assistance in one or all areas of systems and application administration that includes testing, design and analysis, software upgrades and problem resolution. Assists in the formulation of procedures and best practices for users of applications. Designs training programs, including classroom lectures, online courses, and one on one sessions directed at faculty and staff, or those who use the university's technology services. Helps faculty employ the use of instructional technology and serves as an instructional technology expert. Provides subject matter expertise in support of the applications team responsible for instructional technology systems and applications, including the learning management system.



The responsibilities of this position also include: analysis, design, test, implementation, patching, system upgrades/migrations and troubleshooting issues and problem resolution to meet customer expectations. Ensures the reliable performance of assigned business applications including COTS and other assigned systems. Plans and coordinates new software releases, fixes and upgrades with technical teams and users. Recommends new features or changes to configuration/workflows based on user feedback. Assists in the formulation of procedures and best practices for users of business applications and related computing technology.



Responsibilities



Configure, maintain and manage the application services environment:

* Analyze, plan, design, install, configure, upgrade and maintain applications and services (including and not limited to ERP, COTS, business and cloud-based applications).

* Administer and maintain assigned applications (production and non-production environments).

* Develop and document processes for routine maintenance and management tasks related to application administration, monitoring, security administration etc.

* Research and identify software patches/fixes for systems.

* Perform system patching, upgrades, migrations activities for ancillary applications.

* Develop, automate and maintain scripts to monitor systems.

* Troubleshoot and repair system problems.

* Create and update system documentation.

* Define appropriate metrics to measure performance and ensure metrics are collected, reported and reviewed regularly.

* Develop, maintain and report results of monitoring scripts to measure identified quality metrics and alert appropriately to any exceptions.

* Periodically audit logs and access privileges to ensure appropriate security and privacy of applications and data.

* Develop and document processes for routine maintenance and management tasks related to application administration, monitoring, security administration etc.



Application administration, integration, maintenance and management:

* Perform routine and periodic administration and maintenance tasks for the assigned applications other technologies, adhering to established change control procedures.

* Perform quality control, assurance and testing for systems and application management and related applications and services.

* Administer assigned applications (production and non-production environments).

* Develop and deploy standard operating procedures for maintenance.

management, and for applying upgrades, patches, releases of supported applications and related applications technologies.

* Design and develop application interfaces; create and implement testing scripts for major releases, patches, and integration upgrades.

* Lead application upgrade projects; test, validate and ensure all current and new functionality is tested and released for use by campus community

* Define and develop appropriate metrics to measure performance and ensure metrics are collected, reported and reviewed regularly.

* Perform quality control, assurance and testing on systems.

* Periodically audit logs and access privileges to ensure appropriate security and privacy of applications and data.

* Process assigned service request tickets according to established procedures and SLAs.

* Develop, maintain and report results of monitoring scripts to measure identified quality metrics and alert appropriately to any exceptions.

* Review new products and services to enhance the overall service management of the application services environment.

* Develop and implement the technical architecture of ancillary applications and interfaces to the ERP environment.

* Work closely with the technical teams to develop, configure and maintain system interfaces (internal and external).



Training and Communication:

* Provide orientation regarding the installed technical tools for faculty, staff and students; conduct in-service training programs for faculty and staff including workshops, demonstrations and one on one instruction; provide documentation on university specific uses of technologies.

* Serve as a technical resource for faculty, staff and students as it pertains to the specific area of application; assist faculty with training and recommendations for integrating technologies.

* Communicate with functional users on system development activities.

* Communicate internally within the team, group and division on upcoming needs, enhancements, projects issues and concerns. Follow up using established communication procedures so that the campus community is kept in the loop.



Participate in new functionality development to ensure adoption of secure, elegant and low maintenance data designs. Activities include:

* Work closely with our partners (user groups and departments) to create business process analysis and mapping, assist in identifying opportunities for process improvement.

* Evaluate existing products for enhancements, review new products and services to enhance the overall service management of the application services environment.

* Perform analysis to identify systems requirements.

* Communicate with users on system development activities.



Provide technical support for Other Business applications and COTS systems:

* Assist in installing, upgrading and maintaining systems and related applications and services.

* Perform quality control, assurance and testing for applications and services.

* Administer assigned applications (production and non-production environments).

Periodically audit logs and access privileges to ensure appropriate security and privacy of applications and data.

* Process assigned service request tickets according to established procedures and SLAs.

* Analyze malfunctioning systems, and work with vendors and Technology Services teams as needed to implement necessary corrective actions, in an accurate, timely and efficient manner, using established change control procedures as required.

* Develop functional specifications based on system requirements.

* Analyze, plan, design, install, configure, upgrade and maintain applications and services including but not limited to Blackboard, COTS, business and cloud-based applications.

* Administer and maintain assigned applications (production and non-production environments).

* Perform system patching, upgrades, migrations activities for ancillary applications.

* Assist in the formulation of procedures and best practices for users of the systems supported.



Other duties include:

* Work as part of the application team to carry out assignments within the framework established by the supervisor and in conformance with established practices and procedures; bring unexpected or controversial findings to the supervisor's attention.

* Be a team player and champion to peers and customers.

* Work closely with managed services providers, vendors and contractors as needed.

* Share knowledge and experience to develop a culture of collaboration and sharing.

* Participate in developing a framework for documentation standards, and mentor peers and team members to adopt culture of keeping documentation up-to-date.

* Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisors.



Qualifications:

* Bachelor's Degree or four (4) years' experience as an Applications Engineer accepted in lieu of degree

* Must have at least three (3) to four (5) years' experience as a system administrator or applications administrator.

* Must have at least three (3) years' experience in managing systems and applications in higher education, or similar experience in secondary education.

* At least one (1) year of team leadership experience is required.



Required Experience:

* Administration of COTS and ERP applications.

* Developing usage metrics using reporting tools

* Maintaining and managing applications and interfaces with other applications

* Experience installing and configuring COTS applications in a multitier environment.



Desired Experience:

* Project planning and project management experience.

* Higher Education experience.



Knowledge of, and materially demonstrable skills and experience in implementing, configuring and applying, the following:

* IT concepts, principles, methods, and practices.

* ERP principles, methods, and practices.

* Information security principles and methods.

* Microsoft remote desktop services (RDS) configuration and administration.

* Microsoft Windows 7 and later, Apple macOS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard or later, and Microsoft Office 2011 or later; Google G Suite is a plus.

* Software development lifecycle (SDLC) principles, methods, and practices.

* Operational task automation through programming and scripting principles and methods.

* Windows Server 2012 or later in an Active Directory environment.

* Cloud based applications and services- SaaS, PaaS, IaaS (especially Amazon Web Services)

* Performance monitoring principles and methods.



Successful completion of the following training tracks is highly desirable:

* Microsoft Solutions Expert (MCSE) or Microsoft Solutions Associate (MCSA)

* Information security certification, e.g., CompTIA Security+, CompTIA CASP, CISSP.

* Project management certification, e.g. PMP
