The Systems Administrator role is responsible for installation, configuration, and support of infrastructure both on site and in the cloud for the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in the Information Technology Services (ITS) Team. This position also helps maintain MCAD's information technology systems including servers, networking, applications, and databases; assists in the development of laptop and server Operating System images, deployment of applications and services, device management, and advanced technical problem solving; monitors services and applications to ensure availability to system users; assists with the implementation of new and upgraded technologies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Systems Administration

    • Installs, configures, and maintains server hardware and software, including Linux and Windows operating systems, applications, and patches

    • Supports, troubleshoots, and maintains server and security systems for critical campus wide applications

    • Virtual and physical server environment support using VMWare and Citrix XenServer

    • Maintains NetApp storage infrastructure

    • Scripting: creates and maintains scripts for user accounts, monitoring systems, and automating routine tasks

    • Configures systems for high availability, failover, load balancing, and full redundancy

    • Networking, desktop, and other general technology support as required

    • After-hours support for Infrastructure related emergencies as well occasional weekend maintenance

    • Other duties as assigned by the Director of IT Services



  • Software and Service Administration

    • OpenLDAP directory services, account provisioning, maintenance, and authentication

    • Jenzabar Student Information System (SIS) with Microsoft SQL Server 2016 and 2019

    • Microsoft Activity Directory (AD) user and computer account management

    • DNS, DHCP, Remote Access

    • File Servers: NFS, ISCSI, and CIFS

    • Security and patch management

    • Monitoring: System Logs, Nagios, or similar tools



  • Cloud Service Administration

    • Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS

    • Identity Providers (IDP) and SAML authentication systems, configuration and management

    • Learning Management System (LMS)



  • Device Administration

    • Supports Microsoft Windows based computers for Finance Department using Microsoft InTune or similar tools for application delivery, inventory tracking, and patch management

    • AD group policy administration



  • Security and Backup

    • Server and endpoint patching, monitoring

    • User and group permissions and access

    • Endpoint Protection Software

    • Retrospect Server backup and recovery



  • Project Management

    • Creates and implements project plans, risk assessments, and contingency plans

    • Gathers and analyzes metrics to help identify College needs: evaluates current production systems capacity and performance

    • Provides support for test or development systems during evaluation

    • Develops functional requirements, specifications, and standards for hardware and software

    • Makes recommendations for changes or purchasing to the Director of Information Technology Services and the AVP of Technology



  • Documentation

    • Creates and maintains procedures, training material, standards, reports, and technical other documents as assigned

    • Change, backup, disaster recovery, and rollback plans

    • Project and task documentation in ticketing system




SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES


This position does not have supervisory responsibility.




EDUCATION


Bachelor's Degree in MIS, or equivalent technical experience, required



EXPERIENCE



  • 2 years Linux/UNIX administration

  • 2 years Windows Server administration

  • Ticketing systems such as SolarWinds Service Desk, RT

  • 2 years scripting experience: Shell, Bash, Powershell, PERL, or Python

  • 2 years Microsoft SQL Server and related reporting tool experience

  • Identity Providers such as Okta, Google, OneLogin

  • 2 years server virtualization technologies: VMWare ESX 6, vCenter, Citrix XenServer, or similar

  • NetApp storage infrastructure and management

  • Endpoint Protection Software: Crowdstrike or similar cloud based solutions

  • Understanding of LAN/WAN, networking protocols, hardware, security, and troubleshooting

  • Server management tools including Windows Remote Desktop, SSH, and platform specific tools: Apt, Group Policy Management Console, etc.

  • Operating System Image development and deployment

  • Flexible and able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment

  • Organized and has the ability to manage multiple projects of varying length

  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy

  • Positive, self-motivated, individual who can complete tasks independently

  • Must be a team player

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Collaborates effectively with their team members as well as other departments

  • Represents MCAD's vision, purpose, and values in day-to-day work and interactions with students, staff, faculty, and campus guests, as well as the greater community

This position operates in a professional office environment. This position requires the ability and willingness to closely partner with team members and colleagues in other departments. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets.
