Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Systems Administrator, supporting the Computer Science (CS) Department and the Center for Collaborative Approaches to Science (CCAS). Allocation of effort is 75% to the CS Department and 25% to CCAS. This position reports to the CS Department Chair.

Position responsibilities: (to both CS and CCAS, unless otherwise indicated)
  • Maintains and supports the integrity of the operating system environment and various computer systems.
  • Administers, installs, and troubleshoots a variety of operating systems, primarily Ubuntu Linux.
  • Ensure that the VMWare infrastructure maintains resilient, secure, and efficient operations.
  • Performs systems maintenance tasks, such as system back-up, recovery, and file maintenance. Schedules, installs, and tests system software upgrades.
  • Maintains and configures networking infrastructure, storage solutions, and firewalls.
  • Create and maintain system documentation.
  • Ensure systems security including monitoring and control procedures, establishing and testing disaster recovery policies, and overseeing the operation of departmental backup systems.
  • Solve technical problems while working under minimal supervision.
  • Identify need for and implementation of updates, patches and fixes and system enhancements, log monitoring, and system hardening.
  • Provide user support to faculty and students including appropriate training and classroom lectures to new users on systems and policies.
  • Coordinate faculty expectations and needs with existing and prospective computing resources.
  • Meet regularly with the Computing and Information Services (CIS) Network and Systems Director and participate in Network and Systems team meetings to ensure alignment with CIS college-wide standards and approaches.
  • Meet CS financial requirements by submitting information for budgets, managing expenses, and creating budget projections based on academic course hardware and software needs.
  • Train and supervise the CS department intern.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • A minimum of five years of experience in systems administration, preferably some for an academic department, current working knowledge of Ubuntu and Debian GNU/Linux on a broad range of hardware platforms.
  • Superior troubleshooting skills are required.
  • Experience with the following: Linux systems, VMware, firewalls, network switching and routing, Dell Compellent array, system automation using shell scripts and other scripting languages backups and recovery, file sharing over multiple protocols (including NFS), system monitoring, multiple web services and protocols, and multi-user remote access; ; HPC clusters, grid computing, and parallel and distributed software tools.
  • Experience with Linux access control and security.
  • Must be able to work efficiently and cooperatively with faculty and students in a multitasking, interrupt-driven environment.
    Strong interpersonal skills are required.
    Must be willing to provide after-hours support as needed.



Education/Certification:
Bachelors degree in IT-related field preferred; Associates degree required.
