System Design Specialist 3 (Security System Design Specialist)

The Physical Security Office within University Police and Public Safety is seeking a Security System Design Specialist.

The successful candidate will provide design, programming, and troubleshooting support related to security technology installations. Job requires familiarity with network connected security appliances. Desired experience includes electronic access controls, video surveillance, and alarm system technologies.

Duties include but not limited to the following:
  • Assure project compliance with University security and facility access policies, their associated procedures, and Physical Security construction standards.
  • Stewardship of University's electronic security specifications.
  • Act as the primary University representative regarding security installations and projects throughout the Commonwealth. Includes; Security system design review, system commissioning, assisting with security related project management.
  • Provide device and network troubleshooting of appliances connected to security network and centralized servers to include wireless security technologies.
  • Provide network IP assignment for networked security appliances to include, cameras, servers, access control panels, security panels, security intercoms, and access controlled doors.
  • Tactical and strategic planning and evaluation of security technology options for adoption into existing security best practices for the University.
  • Technical support to the University's Police Communications Center and their associated central security technologies.
  • Forensic investigative support to University Police and assist with other security system information requests.
  • Help solicit, select, and approve qualified security integrators to meet University standards.


The position requires substantial collaboration with security integrators, University electronics technicians, and IT personnel. Must be proficient in maintenance, administration, and troubleshooting of security appliances and have a working knowledge of various operating systems. The successful candidate should be well versed in best security practices as related to facility access and possess a high level of communication skills. Experience with American Dynamics VideoEdge surveillance servers and SoftwareHouse Ccure 9000 access control technologies is a plus.

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus 4 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

A fingerprint background check will be required to work within the Police facility in addition to standard background checks.

This position will be based in University Police and Public Safety at University Park. This is a full-time position that may require some travel to campuses as needed. There will be an expectation to work several yearly emergency operations events.
