Splunk Systems Administrator

The Web Applications Team in Infrastructure, a unit of Penn State IT, is looking for a highly motivated and technically strong systems administrator with a passion for providing professional customer service and operational excellence. The ideal candidate will work as a member of our Web Applications Team in support of the University-wide Splunk (Log collecting & analysis system) service.

Responsibilities include:
  • Systems administration, maintenance, performance testing and monitoring of service infrastructure
  • Designing services with performance, scaling, and high availability in mind
  • Implementing the latest IT and security best practices for modern infrastructure and software management (e.g., Infrastructure as Code, GitOps)
  • Automating routine and repetitive tasks to streamline operations and create efficiencies
  • On-boarding customers and ongoing operational support

    This service directly supports cybersecurity analysts, IT departments, Business Intelligence, Operations Center, Research Community, and other business units. The infrastructure is distributed across Penn State data centers and supports the daily ingest of 3+ TB of data from over 13,000 client systems ranging from on-prem and cloud infrastructures. The service has a multi-site index tier and 9 search heads.

    The desired knowledge, skills and behaviors for this position include 4+ years of:
  • Collaborating with, and supporting, peer team members
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including documentation for teams, knowledge base, and training of customers
  • Being proactive in providing superior customer service to units that depend on the service
  • Possess strong time-management and organizational skills
  • Have a strong desire to analyze, diagnose, and address technical issues while being flexible, and maintaining critical thinking under pressure
  • Experience with Bash, Python or other scripting languages
  • Have experience with highly available production systems administration on Linux-based platforms
  • Experience with configuration management tools (ie, Ansible, CFEngine) and Git
  • Preferred experience (If not, training will be provided) in administering Splunk or other log collecting & analysis systems.
  • In-depth understanding of the value-add of log collection and aggregation for business needs

    This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4 systems administrator, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

    The location of this position is flexible and can operate fully remote within the United States, fully in-person at our University Park Campus, or in a hybrid model of both in-person and remote. Standard working hours are in the eastern time zone.

    Please note that the 7x24x365 availability of campus technology services may require work outside regular work hours to solve operational problems or ensure proper functioning of services. A standard maintenance window is followed.
