Software Engineer
General Summary/Purpose:

The Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering aims to transform society through engineering education, creation and dissemination of knowledge, and activities that improve the human condition. To that end, the Whiting School of Engineering Software Development team brings robust software-based solutions and processes to bear in order to assure that students, faculty, and staff have the tools that they need to achieve the aims of the Whiting School.

The top candidate for this position will have a passion for developing innovative software solutions by bringing to bear an impressive array of communication skills, strong ability to work throughout the entire software lifecycle including system analysis, gathering business requirements, producing technical/functional specifications and designs, and implementing optimal solution, functional and integration testing, and providing ongoing maintenance.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

This position will interact with students, faculty, and staff throughout the Whiting School and with technical staff across the institution. In particular this position will work with students, faculty, and staff to understand technical or business problems and to suggest or implement software solutions for those problems. This position will also need to work with other technical staff members within the WSE Software Development teams, WSE IT team, and the broader JH IT team in order to implement solutions that integrate with existing products and/or solutions. This position will be responsible for being a thought leader and proposing improvements to both process and technology and for mentoring more junior staff members. Work will be assigned by the Software Development IT Manager and reviewed by the Software Development IT Manager and other Software Engineers within the team. This position is largely expected to work independently.

ANALYSIS AND REQUIREMENTS GATHERING
  • Define complex business/education problems by meeting with clients to observe and understand current processes and the issues related to those processes. Provide written documentation of findings to share with the client and other IT colleagues.
  • Gather complex system requirements by meeting with clients and researching existing technology to understand the business requirements and possible solutions for new applications.


DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
  • Develop detailed tasks and project plans by analyzing project scope and milestones for complex projects in order to ensure product is delivered in a timely fashion according to software lifecycle standards.
  • Write functional/technical specifications from the complex system requirements, putting them into functional and technical descriptions for use by programmers and business analysts to develop technical solutions.
  • Develop/change data input, files/database structures, data transformation, algorithms, and data output by using appropriate computer language/tools to provide technical solutions for complex application development tasks.
  • Document code and associated processes by adhering to development methodologies, adding code comments and appropriate documentation to various knowledge-base system(s) to simplify code maintenance and to improve support.
  • Provide monitoring and guidance in application design and development to more junior staff.
  • Provide thought leadership in designing and developing innovative integrated solutions..


TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION
  • Create and document complex test scenarios using the appropriate testing tools to validate and verify application functionality.
  • Test all changes by using the appropriate complex test scenarios to ensure all delivered solutions work as expected and errors are handling in a meaningful way.
  • Author and maintain documentation by writing audience-appropriate materials to serve as technical and/or end-user references.
  • Mentor junior staff in testing tools and technologies by reviewing their work.


IMPLEMENTATION AND MAINTENANCE
  • Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project to communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
  • Monitor changes and resolve complex problems by responding as they occur, by reviewing all processing and output of the newly implemented solution, and by proactively ensuring the solution works successfully in order to satisfy the customer requirements and to provide a smooth transition to the new solution.
  • Provide support by investigating and resolving issues, including complex issues to ensure prompt, effective service.


Describe the specific systems, applications, projects for which the position is responsible:
This position is responsible for developing primarily web and/or server based applications typically using Linux, Apache, PHP, and MySQL on the backend and Javascript on the front end. Common applications that this position will be responsible for developing include transferring and transforming data between systems; developing forms and/or databases to support processes for students, faculty, and staff; generating dashboards and reports. This work is complex because of competing priorities; diverse needs from various stakeholders; and a variety of systems that need to two way communication.

Describe scale/size of area, project and/or system supported:

This position supports the entire Whiting School of Engineering which includes some 561 full time faculty and staff and another 450 or so part-time faculty and APL staff. This position will also have some responsibility supporting the EP website which has approximately 8,000 unique visitors per month. This position will regularly interact with at least five WSE web servers and will also have some responsibility in backing up the individuals primarily responsible for the rest of the WSE server infrastructure (at least 30+ servers). Moreover, this position will be responsible for writing programs that interact with Blackboard, SIS, Wordpress, Active Directory, Jira, Confluence, Splunk, and other systems as needed. This position supports the entirety of the Whiting School of Engineering. As in the last section, the complexity derives from designing and implementing systems that can satisfy the requirements of a broad customer base as well as supporting the multiple various systems and endpoints utilized by WSE and JHU.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Five years of related work experience with computer systems and applications.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for education. Additional education may substitute for experience.
