Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno invites candidates for the position of IT Server Administrator in IT Operations, a service unit of the Office of Information Technology division. Reporting to the Manager of IT, the Server Administrator positions will support all server operating systems and server system software. This position is also responsible for server installation and administration, monitoring of system performance and capacity to ensure high levels of availability and security of supported productivity applications.

Typical systems overseen by an incumbent for the IT Server Administrator positions include physical and virtual servers running Microsoft Windows Server, CentOS, RedHat, or Ubuntu operating systems. In addition to server-based environments, cloud- or web-based application management (Office365 OneDrive, OnBase, DocuSign, or RedCap, for example) may also fall under the responsibility of these positions. The position will work in a team environment with individuals of different competencies in server administration. Team members work together on most projects to meet goals and deadlines. However, autonomy and independent action is required at times to work effectively across OIT.

The IT System Administrator position will support all server operating systems and server system software. Responsibilities also include server installation and administration, monitoring of system performance and capacity to ensure high levels of availability and security.



Required Qualifications

High School graduation and four (4) years of related work experience; OR

Associate's Degree from an accredited institution and three (3) years of related work experience; OR

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and two (2) year of related work experience; OR

Master's Degree from an accredited institution and one (1) year related work experience.

Related experience: IT experience in an enterprise or university environment managing or maintaining Linux/Windows servers or related experience.

Experience and familiarity with:
  • CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, and Red Hat operating system deployment and management
  • Windows-based operating system deployment and management
  • TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP network concepts and operation
  • Apache/Tomcat Web Environments
  • IIS Web Environments
  • Geographically separated datacenters
  • Project management concepts and participation
  • VMware vSphere or other virtualization technologies
  • Microsoft SQL server, queries, security, and management
  • Scripting languages
  • Automation platforms and techniques
  • Documentation principles
  • Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery processes
  • Research computing environments and demands
  • Pro-Diversity and Inclusive work environments



Compensation Grade

Administrative Faculty - B, the typical salary for this position is $65,000

Schedule and Travel Requirements

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees

Department Information

Office of Information Technology, Operations Division maintains and provides system administration for the centralized physical and virtual server infrastructure to support file, web, database, backup, and application services on Windows and Linux/UNIX. OIT operations also support High-Performance Computing for research and manages critical data centers on campus. Additionally, third-party app specialists provide support and maintenance for major applications in use throughout the University.
