Duties & Responsibilities-
The Server Administrator will be a member of the server team, located within the Department of Information Technology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (SPH), and will support faculty, staff, and students.

In this fast-paced environment, the Server Administrator will be responsible for caring for over 100 Windows, Linux, and VMware ESXi servers that power many of key administrative, research, and communication applications of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Servers are located in two Boston data centers and at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The Server Administrator will collaborate with other members of the server team, maintaining and administering Linux and Windows computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software and all configurations. S/he will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing systems security measures in order to protect data, software, and hardware. S/he will be involved in an exciting new project involving the planning and migrating of servers and services to Amazon Web Services (AWS), and will monitor the performance of, create accounts for, and manage access to the SPH computing environment. In addition, the position will be responsible for performing routine system startup and shutdown procedures, applying patches, performing updates and upgrades to maintain a stable environment (including performing data back-ups and disaster recovery operations), and providing assistance in the troubleshooting and resolving of user/server issues in a timely manner with proper documentation.

This position requires the flexibility to work longer hours when implementing and evaluating technology and, as necessary, to troubleshoot and resolve problems. Commitment to customer service, experience working in a demanding, fast-paced environment, keeping abreast of industry trends and changes in technologies, with a team orientation, and flexibility are also attributes of a successful applicant to this position.

PLEASE NOTE: This position also requires occasional lifting (50 lbs).

PLEASE NOTE: This position shares 24/7 after-hours on-call rotation.

Basic Qualifications-
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience required
- 5+ years of related experience required
- Experience maintaining and administering Windows and Linux systems required

Additional Qualifications-
- Server administration experience in a large environment (and/or higher education) strongly preferred
- Experience maintaining server hardware and storage systems strongly preferred
- Experience with Windows Server, Microsoft Active Directory, O365, VMWare vSphere, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and a solid understanding of networking and security fundamentals preferred
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting virtual server environments strongly preferred
- Experience configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting servers in a cloud environment strongly preferred
- Experience monitoring performance, creating accounts and managing access strongly preferred
- Experience performing routine computer system startup and shutdown procedures, applying patches, updates and upgrades to maintain a stable environment, as well as having the ability to perform data back-ups and disaster recovery operations strongly preferred
- Experience with planning, coordinating, and implementing systems security measures in order to protect data, software, and hardware preferred
- Experience with identity and access management in an enterprise environment preferred
- Experience monitoring and responding to failed back-ups, critical server errors and user issues during off hours preferred

Experience in the following (any and/or all) specific technologies preferred:

- Suse Enterprise Linux 11 and 12; AWS Linux; Microsoft Windows Server 2008, 2012, & 2016; Microsoft Windows 7, 10 & Office 2010/2013/2016; Microsoft SQL; Microsoft File and Print Services; Shell and PowerShell scripting; SAN & NAS storage; Commvault Enterprise Backup; VMware Horizon Suite 6.x & 7.x; VMWare vSphere; VMWare virtual desktop infrastucture; Pharos print services; Accellion file transfer products; McAfee Antivirus products; Apache and OpenSSH

Any and/or all certifications in Microsoft, VMware, or AWS products preferred, specifically:

- AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner; AWS Certified SysOps Administrator; MCSA - Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator; VMware Certified Associate (VCA); VMware Certified Professional (VCP)

Strong communication and organizational skills; experience with technical documentation; strong troubleshooting skills and experience working with users of all levels of technical expertise; willingness to troubleshoot problems outside area of expertise; excellent oral and written communication skills with experience distilling technical information into a user-friendly explanation; experience working independently and as part of a team; experience liaison between end-users, server team and other IT teams; experience working in a deadline-driven environment; experience prioritizing work and understanding the impact work preferred
