Peterson Family Dean, Arts and Sciences

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks an inspiring and collaborative leader to serve as its next Peterson Family Dean of Arts and Sciences. The Dean will work with university leaders and with faculty and staff to advance arts and sciences and further the profile of the Institute. This effort will include partnering with other disciplines to strengthen and develop the university's innovative undergraduate and graduate programs; nurturing excellence in teaching and research activities; and furthering WPI's unique identity as a midsize research university focusing on engineering, science, technology, and mathematics, with high-quality academic programs in the arts and humanities, the social sciences, and business.

A liberal technical education has been a centerpiece of the WPI experience since its founding. All of the over 4,300 undergraduate students at WPI take courses in the arts and sciences disciplines as part of their foundational learning. The university is committed to traditional humanities and liberal arts education and research, particularly as studied through the lens of science and technology. The educational program at WPI is celebrated for pioneering interdisciplinary, integrative, project-based learning. The aim is to prepare students for lives of tangible impact, innovation, and leadership.

The next Dean of Arts and Sciences will join WPI at a propitious moment, as it builds on an already strong reputation, extends its reach, and implements an ambitious strategic plan to be the premier global polytechnic. WPI has experienced considerable upward momentum over the past several years as evidenced by record-breaking application numbers, increased selectivity, and research growth, all while maintaining recognized excellence in teaching. The next Dean will capitalize upon this excitement and growing national profile while managing change in a sustainable manner that preserves WPI's deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and research.

The Dean will lead over 250 full- and part-time faculty across seven academic departments (Biology and Biotechnology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Humanities and Arts, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and Social Sciences and Policy Studies) and several multidisciplinary programs including Bioinformatics & Computational Biology, Data Science, Environmental and Sustainability Studies, Interactive Media and Game Development, International and Global Studies, Professional Writing, and Robotics Engineering. The Dean is also tasked with oversight of the over 1,400 undergraduate students and 600 graduate students pursuing studies in the arts and sciences. The position reports to the Provost.
