UC Santa Cruz is a public university like no other in California, combining the intimacy of a small, liberal arts college with the depth and rigor of a major research university.

The Network Engineer provides support to maintain and enhance the information technology needs of the School of Engineering. The computing facility spans across several buildings on campus and includes some off campus sites as well.

The Network Engineer participates in planning, development, maintenance and documentation of the School's computing and Information Technology (IT) resources, including its research and administrative computing environments. The incumbent is expected to stay technically current, pursue training as needed, and ensure the Baskin School of Engineering (BSoE) computing facility remains up-to- date with the latest technology.

As a member of the computing team, the incumbent may be responsible for coordinating projects that investigate new technologies of use for the school.

This person in this position applies skills as a seasoned, experienced communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures. You will resolve a wide range of complex issues and must demonstrate competency in selecting methods and techniques to obtain solutions.

Qualifications include:
  • Extensive knowledge and experience working with Hewlett Packard and Cisco routers, switches and networking hardware. Specific knowledge on the programming of network switches.
  • Knowledge and experience specifying, setting up, configuring and securing IEEE 802.11 wireless networking equipment to include wireless access points, bridges, base stations and adapters, principally those from Cisco.
  • Ability to install network patches and to setup, configure and maintain hubs, switches, routers, bridges. Including but not limited to configuring access lists and virtual lans (VLANs), configuring switches for MAC address port locking, configuring trunk and channel ports where multiple VLANs and links are in use.
  • Ability to trace remote hosts using MAC addresses and switch ARP and CAM tables.
  • Knowledge and ability to fabricate networking cables including standard CATSE l00BaseT ethernet cables and networking crossover cables for IOOMB and IGB networking.

    This position requires passing a pre-employment criminal history background check.
