Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Linux Systems Administrator position. The Linux Systems Administrator is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $90,000 per year - commensurate with experience. The Linux Systems Administrator will be part of the Systems & Networking team, reporting directly to the Director of Systems and Networking.

In this role, you will proactively maintain and develop all Linux infrastructure technology on bare metal, VMWare, and AWS cloud instances, maintaining a 24x7x365 uptime service. You will take an active role in patching, compiling, securing, and troubleshooting Linux servers in Amherst College's heterogeneous environment, and your work will include the automation of systems administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs. You will need to maintain best practices on managing systems and services across all environments, including fault finding; analysis of logging information and system performance; and capacity planning. You will further be responsible for the management, coordination, and implementation of software upgrades, patches, and hotfixes on server hardware and virtual machine instances.

Additionally, the Linux Systems Administrator will work closely with the CISO to provide input to improve the stability and security of our Linux systems; provide subject matter expertise on the security posture of Linux systems in our enterprise; and troubleshoot and remediate identified security issues, including 0-day exploits. You will maintain and monitor all patch releases and design various patch installation strategies to maintain systems according to NIST standards.

You will work collaboratively with members across our IT teams to drive our infrastructure strategic plan, as well as perform "hands-on" work where appropriate. You will provide expertise and share an understanding of current capability gaps, architectural gaps, and market and industry trends that can be used to set the College's future strategic direction.

This position will require you to be on campus once or twice a week, and you will need to have residence in either Massachusetts or Connecticut. This position is an Exempt PT-4, paying between $90,000 - 100,000/year depending on experience.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Management
  • Work closely with operations and development personnel to provision, support and troubleshoot on-prem, cloud and hybrid Linux infrastructure.
  • Effectively collaborate with a diverse team.
  • Provide day to day support of operational environments.
  • Maintain a highly available infrastructure.
  • Provide application support.
  • Understand and contribute to the creation of system support documents and build scripts for Linux systems administration.
  • Operate our Linux systems within our security and privacy guidelines.
  • Work with the CISO to ensure resolution of security issues arising from the Linux kernel, including 0-day exploits.


Design and Implementation
  • Design technical architectures that fulfill business strategies based on industry and organizational standards, patterns and best practices.
  • Orchestrate implementation of proposed solutions on small and medium sized projects.
  • Assess, design, develop, and analyze Linux architecture.
  • Determine Linux architecture solutions that meet performance, scalability, reliability, and security needs.
  • Lead on architectural governance and decisions related to tools, technology and system tradeoffs as part of a cross functional architecture decisions.
  • Research and recommend Linux technologies to improve the current systems in support of organization's strategic vision.
  • Lead in the design and development of integrations among the College's information systems.
  • Lead in preparing and supporting architectural governance and decisions related to tools and technology and system choices.
  • Assist the Director of Systems and Networking in the decision-making of where Linux workloads should reside (cloud or on-prem).


Systems Monitoring and Security
  • Monitors and analyzes performance and availability against expectations, implements performance tuning, and troubleshoots a variety of moderate to complex network problems.
  • Provides network performance statistics and reports.
  • Patches and maintains systems in coordination with the office of the CISO. Monitors and ensures safety and security of Linux systems in our enterprise.


Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 3-5 Years experience in maintaining Linux systems
  • Commitment to effectively working with a diverse community


Preferred
  • Linux certifications (RHCT, RHCE and LPIC)
