JOB SUMMARY

The Linux Systems Administrator applies skills as a seasoned, experienced systems infrastructure professional to support the UCSC Library's overall infrastructure and systems to resolve a wide range of moderately complex issues. They will work closely with University Library staff to understand and meet their functional and technical computing needs for a stable and robust computing infrastructure. They will propose and implement system solutions based on user/client requirements, costs, and required integration with existing applications, infrastructure, systems, or platforms while keeping up with industry trends. Goals for the Systems Administrator and other key Library IT support staff team are generally communicated in solution or project terms.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $83,500 - $92,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Systems Engineering & Administration
  • Provides technical support to enable the realization, use, and retirement of engineered systems, including systems analysis and systems administration for the University Library's locally-hosted Linux and AWS cloud systems.
  • Performs analysis to acquire, install, modify, and support operating systems, databases, utilities, and Internet / Intranet-related tools.
  • Writes and maintains systems documentation for infrastructure.
  • Develops, adopts, and implements maintenance, patch management, system standards, monitoring, backups, and practices.
  • Performs Network-Attached Storage (NAS) storage administration. Proposes, documents, and implements standards for fault-tolerant host integration.
  • Maintains and extends the functionality of database services and servers.
  • Researches, identifies, and tests technology products required for solution delivery in collaboration with the Library ITS Team.
  • Establishes, implements, and documents the technology integration or migration strategies.
  • Follows industry trends and new technologies for systems architecture.
  • Writes and executes complex scripts and may write software in support of systems management, log analysis, and other system administration duties for multiple integrated systems.

25% - Systems Architect
  • Defines, designs, and implements computing solutions within the greater ITS organization with a primary focus on UCSC Library.
  • Proposes and implements moderately complex system updates and rollouts. May perform moderately complex networking tasks and interoperability assessments for interconnected servers or components of clusters for communication.
  • Manages systems and services that result in stable and robust computing infrastructures that support the current and expected computing needs of the UCSC Library infrastructure; including file and application servers (physical and virtual and cloud) and storage (DAS and SAN and cloud) that support: web content management services, web hosting services, digital media storage and retrieval systems, databases, firewalls, collaborative applications, integrated library systems, backup/restore systems, ticketing and monitoring systems, email, etc. This infrastructure also provides the foundation for Library-specific products and services.

15% - Consulting
  • Develops relationships with University Library staff, acting as a consultant to understand, evaluate, and meet the needs of various computing-related projects.
  • Collaborates with the ITS / Library Computing team to:
    • Write and execute a standard set of infrastructure components for hardware, software, and processes.
    • Design, plan, develop, implement, maintain, and document system architectures.
    • Operate systems, application software, tools, data communications, and system monitoring, with an emphasis on efficiency, performance, and reliability.
    • Conduct systems analysis, design techniques, programming, time estimation, cost estimates, and scheduling.

10% - System Administration Operations and Security
  • Conducts prospective programming tasks.
  • Assists with the development of long-range (3-5 year) and tactical (1-3 year) plans for Library IT infrastructure-related components.
  • Collaborates and develops relationships with UCSC Library and UCSC ITS colleagues toward continuous improvements in furthering the University Library's mission.
  • May lead a team of systems / infrastructure professionals in collaboration with core ITS teams.
  • Performs complex security control activities to prevent unauthorized access to networked resources. May assist with maintenance of security systems for network equipment and provide recommendations on network access controls.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.
  • Knowledge of the design, development, and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software.
  • Current knowledge of, and recent experience in the application of problem isolation and diagnostic techniques in software, network, and computing hardware malfunctions.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of: supporting, maintaining and troubleshooting Linux operating systems LAMP environments Strong familiarity of VMware hypervisor technologies Experience deploying Linux/UNIX servers as VMware guests AWS platform Cloud security Cloud migration and deployment in multi-cloud environments
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.
  • Demonstrated experience with backup technologies and fundamental data retention concepts.
  • Experience evaluating new technologies including performing simple to moderate cost/benefit analysis.
  • Familiarity with accessible technology principles and practices.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated strong written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
