Learning and Instructional Tools provides enterprise solutions and support for the creation, delivery, and management of instruction in person, online, and in mixed modalities. The Learning and Instructional Tools Team is a primary resource for instructional designers, instructional technologists, faculty, and staff seeking solutions to achieve instructional goals. 

The Learning and Instructional Tools team provides service management and support for the campus LMS (Canvas) and related third-party applications, the campus media storage, serving, and Lecture Capture service (YuJa), the use of Zoom for instruction, the campus Student Experience of Teaching Surveys service (Blue), and accessible instructional technology.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Instructional Technology Specialist works on a collaborative team for Learning and Instructional Tools to support the UCSC campus's instructional technology. They will provide direct support to faculty, staff, and instructional designers in applying technical solutions to achieve teaching and learning goals. The Specialist is a technical professional with knowledge in the overall fields of software applications, enterprise solutions, and instructional technology. This position will also create documentation on the use of instructional tools adopted by UC Santa Cruz. They will develop and lead training of staff and instructors, and train and mentor student workers. This position also provides for the technical administration of systems such as Canvas, YuJa Media Management, and eXplorance Blue, including configuration, integrations, and administrative management of users, business logic, permissions, and security. The Learning and Instructional Tools team engages in continual self-improvement through the community of practice and more formal professional development opportunities.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $85,000 - $92,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Instructional Technology Support and User Support
  • Implements, troubleshoots, documents, tests, and maintains technology systems and related services for the delivery of courses and ancillary tools including: 
    • Learning management solutions, 
    • Media management, lecture capture, and media production solutions, 
    • Remote instruction tools, 
    • Student engagement tools, 
    • Accessible technologies, 
    • Course evaluation survey tools
  • Provides direct technical support and consultation to faculty and staff users for instructional technology services, including response to tickets related to the LMS (Canvas), media creation and enterprise media management (YuJa), course evaluations (Blue), and other instructional tools. Provides on-demand and daily drop-in hours for technical questions and issues in person and via Zoom, Slack, email and other channels.
  • Develops end-user documentation and training related to instructional technology services and products; may deliver training in-person, via live webinars, and in pre-recorded sessions.
  • Collects and analyzes data associated with instructional technology services that informs diagnosis of issues, understanding of product use, and assessment of relative value within the instructional suite.
  • Trains and assists departmental staff and faculty in the use of eXplorance Blue for quarterly surveys.

30% - Product Support and Management
  • Interacts with other ITS teams and vendors in recommending selection of products, integration, testing, and configuration of instructional products and as a technical member of the service teams for the instructional products suite.
  • Manages services that enable systems integrations between campus instructional technology systems utilized by students and faculty.
  • Provides leadership to the team and the community on specific systems and services as a subject matter expert, while developing expertise and providing technical support for other instructional systems.
  • Monitors, troubleshoots and resolves technical issues for user entities matching, maintenance and security.
  • Develop and maintain internal documentation and user-facing documentation.
  • Remain current on product features, functionality and market trends.
  • Evaluates, recommends and implements new instructional technologies.

20% - Instructional Support Community of Practice
  • Collaborates with the Instructional Tools team, UCSC Online Education, Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning, and Divisional IT support staff as part of a community focused on the common goal of supporting the instructional mission of the campus. Provides technical expertise on both instructional and general ITS systems and services.
  • Participates with various campus units to do daily standups and attend or present at routine community knowledge sharing events.

ITS Security Statement

Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT. 
  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. 
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent/related functions.
  • Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. 
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner. 
  • Understanding of service management principles. 
  • Experience administering a complex enterprise application for education, such as a Learning Management System, Course Evaluation system, or other complex systems. 
  • Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis. 
  • Experience with standard Productivity tools, including PowerPoint, Keynote, Word, Excel. 
  • Experience effectively interacting with students, faculty, and staff of varying social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds. 
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. 
  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Knowledge of intellectual property (IP) restrictions, Copyright and Fair Use, FERPA, ADA, S508 policy and law. 
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated skills in implementing adult learning theory, Universal Design, and instructional design.
