Academic IT Services consists of campus wide Research and Instruction teams as well as Divisional Services teams. The latter are localized ITS staff embedded in the campus' five academic divisions and library who provide personalized, discipline-specific, IT support for their constituents in service of the academic mission.  We leverage commonalities through cross-divisional technical communities to develop and deliver right-sized/right-priced common services as appropriate, aggregating what we learn to provide as input to the larger ITS community. This position provides strategic direction, technical leadership, and human and resource management to develop and deliver IT services to the Humanities/Social Sciences and their departments and programs. The incumbent works as part of a collaborative leadership team that delivers coordinated IT services to faculty across the five academic divisions, libraries, and the silicon valley center.

JOB SUMMARY

The IT Manager is a leader of IT professionals who support campus divisions for the Humanities Division or Social Sciences Division at UC Santa Cruz.  This position works to develop collaborative relationships with the division to understand their IT needs.   Successful candidates will demonstrate both breadth and depth in expertise to provide and facilitate IT Services to successfully meet the needs of the division.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $93,200 - $118,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Systems Analysis
  • Analyzes the IT needs of the Division in consultation with the Dean and Leadership team to establish priorities for systems design and implementation to develop innovative IT solutions for common technology challenges, as well as customized IT solutions for the division.
  • Lead the implementation of IT projects, analyzing the needs of and providing support for the division. Engage in operational efficiencies, services, achieve instructional and research goals and keep a constant compass focused on the Academic Mission.
  • Directs the maintenance, evaluation and implementation of an evolving portfolio of standard computing tools and software.
  • Leads continual service improvement of shared service delivery and product development within the division, Academic Services, and in partnership with other ITS units.
  • Evaluates systems for emerging needs, modifications, expanded utilization with centralized provisions, and retirement of services.
  • Leads local IT services to the academic division or potentially larger communities in response to the needs of the division.
  • Ensures security compliance of IT resources within the division.

40% - Divisional Liaison
  • Develops relationships with divisional staff to understand and respond to their needs, guide change and resolve conflicts related to IT services. Acts as a liaison through a highly consultative and consensus-building style.
  • Represents the division in campus-wide IT initiatives, planning, standards and policy setting, operational governance, and prioritization to inform processes within Academic Services.
  • Manages operational efficiencies, achieves instructional and research goals and keeps a constant compass focused on the Academic Mission in the best interest of the division.
  • Serves as the technical Unit Information Security Lead for the division.
  • Develops and monitors operational and budget processes, finance, and space planning.
  • Collaborate with other Academic Services Computing Staff and other ITS departments on the delivery of shared services delivery to faculty across the disciplines.
  • Develops and monitors operational and budget processes, finance, human resources and space planning.

20% - Staff Supervision
  • Hires staff, evaluates performance, delegates day to day operations, recommends reclassifications / pay increases and initiates performance management and disciplinary action, if necessary.
  • Conducts regular meetings with direct reports ensuring they are kept informed of relevant information as it pertains to their job.
  • Schedules work assignments and monitors staff to ensure the division's needs are met.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Information Technology theories and concepts to manage and provide solutions.
  • Broad working knowledge of the applications programming development function.
  • Thorough knowledge of the subject area is sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment, and direction.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of service delivery principles.
  • Knowledge necessary to design, set up, operate, and correct malfunctions involving technology systems.
  • Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, to include the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies.
  • Experienced in leading change management activities and managing their impact across the unit or department.
  • Experience in analyzing buy vs. build procurement for products for effective and efficient technology use.
  • Possesses skills necessary to accomplish department / section objectives and address related problems and issues in an effective manner.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to individuals and groups with potentially varying levels of technical sophistication.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
  • Ability to gather, organize, and analyze data in the completion of assignments.
  • Ability to understand the process involved in adapting, integrating, and modifying existing programs or vendor-supplied products for use within the technical environment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2-5 years of experience managing an information technology organization.
  • Service Management, Product Management, or Project Management certifications of any kind.
  • The IT Infrastructure Humanities (ITIL) Certification.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
