Humanities Computing Services, a product team within ITS, provides products and services to the Humanities Division in support of instruction, research and administrative functions. We offer local and specialized solutions for the Division of Humanities when global campus services don't address specific Division needs.

The EXP unit within ITS is redefining the experience of higher education at UCSC, from designing effective IT services and products to improving the student and staff digital experience to charting a course toward the digital campus of the future. We're looking for people who:

Job Overview

Seeking a technical professional with broad knowledge of web and software applications, enterprise solutions, in-person and remote instruction, and accessible design principles. The candidate will have recognized expertise in specific areas, including web development and design, digital media technologies, training and production, and user experience practices. This position requires an interdisciplinary approach involving many areas of research & instructional technologies. A successful candidate will possess strong organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written, in order to effectively work with a range of UC Santa Cruz campus constituents.
   
This ITS position is embedded within the local Humanities Division IT unit. The person in this role primarily provides direct support to Humanities faculty, staff and students related to instruction and research, and requires knowledge of teaching technologies adopted by UC Santa Cruz, commonly used by universities, as well as emerging tools. This position will research and recommend digital media applications, including audio / video equipment, and execute planning, set up, and testing of proposed solutions, as well as train instructors on use and troubleshooting. 

This position oversees the website portfolio for the Humanities Division and its administrative units, including department, faculty and individual project websites. Position conducts general user administration, monitors new version releases, and applies updates / patches where appropriate. Candidate works with website managers, and consults with website owners to support content organization, and assist with new site setup and/or migration. Position partners with campus web community to keep informed of coming changes, and maintain campus website standards.

Position oversees part-time student employees working on Humanities initiatives including Division websites and web-based communications such as event support and digital signage, and various faculty research initiatives.

This position is functionally aligned with the ITS Experience unit, and expects an understanding and application of user experience (UX) principles when planning, building and applying technological solutions for instruction, research and administrative efforts. This position also participates in larger campus UX improvement efforts within Information Technology Services (ITS) as they relate to instruction & research. 

A successful candidate will routinely engage in the following tasks: Monitor and maintain division websites, oversee new site builds and migrations, and manage student web assistants; Troubleshoot issues with technology, both hardware and software, for instructors, students, and staff; Test and maintain technology approaches and processes; Research, evaluate, summarize, recommend and implement IT solutions to meet teaching and research objectives; Assist with developing, maintaining, and updating training materials and resources in various delivery modalities; Manage faculty development lab, assist in management of instructional laptop carts, and manage equipment loaner pool and checkout process. This position may be relied upon for digital media event support within the Humanities Division. 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary Information: Salary Range: $73,700 - $85,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
30% - Direct Faculty Support
  • Provides direct faculty consulting services including response to requests and trouble tickets related to research & instruction, development of faculty and research websites, and rich media content. 

20% - Lab & Media Support
  • Manage and offer direct support to faculty in the faculty development lab, and manage the Humanities equipment checkout service. Maintain and prepare Division instructional laptop carts in response to instructional / research needs of Division faculty.

20% - Division Website Maintenance
  • Oversees the website portfolio for the Humanities Division and its administrative units, including department, faculty and individual project websites. Conduct general user administration, monitor new releases, and apply updates / patches where appropriate. Manage part-time student employees working on Humanities initiatives including Division websites, digital media, and web-based communications.

10% - Communities of Practice
  • Work with ITS and ITS Experience, Humanities Division, Academic Computing local IT specialists, Digital Media Group and Web Users Group as part of a community focused on the common goal of supporting the instructional & research missions of the campus. This may include one-on-one or small group meetings, participation in Slack, daily standups, attending or presenting at routine community knowledge sharing events.

10% - User Experience
  • Participate in the UX team stand-ups and be a subject matter expert for UX design for instruction and administrative tools. Maintain an understanding of accessibility standards and apply those standards consistently.

10% - Professional Development
  • Engage in continual self-improvement through the community of practice, as well as more structured professional development opportunities.

ITS Security Statement
Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT.
  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software.
  • Broad understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent/related functions.
  • Knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Familiarity with web development and working in a CMS (preferably Wordpress, Cascade, Drupal, and/or Omeka).
  • Understanding of project management and service management principles.
  • Demonstrated understanding of rich media production methods and equipment.
  • Ability to create content using rich media production methods.
  • Experience with standard Productivity tools including the Google Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to create training programs, including workshop development and delivery.
  • Experience effectively interacting with students, faculty, and staff of varying social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Works independently and as part of a team.
  • Works cooperatively with local IT staff in other academic divisions and ITS units on shared service delivery, service incubation, optimization, stabilization as campus standard.
