Director of Data Science

The Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research at Penn State seeks to hire a Director of Data Science! The Director will lead and train a team of enthusiastic analysts in the development and validation of advanced models designed to answer higher education research questions, inform decision-making, and guide policy. The design and development of these models will be informed through relationships with a wide array of University leaders across the 24 Penn State campuses. The Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research seeks to expand the scope of traditional institutional research with the application of machine learning, specifically in the areas of institutional and learning analytics, to better respond to complex and pressing issues in higher education. To contribute to that mission, we are seeking a Director who has strong technical expertise in machine learning and a demonstrated ability to present complex ideas, techniques, and findings in a concise, clear, and effective manner. Penn State is a research extensive, land-grant institution offering degrees at all levels. Penn State is a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities, one of 62 universities recognized for their especially strong research and academic programs. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position will require working knowledge of research methods involving structured and unstructured data, as well as experience with advanced statistical techniques to include predictive and prescriptive modeling. The candidate must have experience in data modeling beyond linear and logistic regression. Experience in creating models utilizing both supervised and unsupervised machine learning as a data scientist is required. The candidate will have demonstrated experience in data wrangling. Supervisory experience is required. The Director will need the capacity to mentor and enhance the team's knowledge of machine learning as it applies to higher education research. The capability to work independently on complex assignments, manage projects, collaborate with others, and make judgments about priorities and quality in order to produce high quality products is essential. The Director will hold a technical role in leading data science projects. Experience using R to apply complex data techniques (data mining, machine learning, and core mathematical modeling) to extract actionable insights through analysis of complex data sets is required. Experience with Python is a plus.
