Job Overview

The Classrooms Labs & Media Product Manager is responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing resources. The Product Manager reviews and approves recommendations for new products or services. The person in this position is involved in developing, modifying and executing policies that affect immediate operation(s) and may also have organization-wide impact.

A Product Manager will be customer-focused and serve as a liaison between UC Santa Cruz stakeholders and Information Technology Services (ITS) technology teams. The person in this position maximizes the opportunity to accelerate the growth trajectory from best in class technology. The successful candidate must be fully apprised of advancements in the industry and will apply that knowledge in proposing solutions.

This position will build, strengthen, maintain and/or repair campus and organizational relationships to allow a true partnership to enable us to increase our impact, speed, and agility.  You will rationalize the product backlog, identify business and technical requirements, and develop the architecture that incrementally builds the ITS roadmap. You will develop technology solutions with your product team as a sponsor of the approved initiative. You will develop success metrics and monitor projects with full transparency.

A Product Manager will develop and communicate product priorities across the campus by collaboration and building consensus. They will coach, espouse, model and partner to ensure an attitude and approach of "we are one team." A win for a product or portfolio of products is also measured in the impact on the overall user journey (across all organizational products). Awareness that we are all one team and the micro and macro user experience and journey are critical for success in this role.

The Classrooms Labs & Media Product Manager's specific domain includes but is not limited to management of the registrar scheduled undergraduate labs, other general purpose labs, virtual labs, technology enhanced classrooms & conference rooms, campus event support, and AV equipment checkout & support. Ensuring that these products are operational while adapting them to the changing needs of the campus is the charge of this role. There will be ambiguous desires and conflicting needs for this product among the many campus stakeholders, but the primary compass of serving the academic mission will help in guiding this role. Key values of the products here are stability, consistency, rapid response, and a focus on teaching and learning. Over time, this role would be charged with improving coordination with other units governing other instructional spaces and labs, perhaps through shared governance, shared practices, or through expansion of the product envelope. Part of this role will be to identify gaps in service between this and similar product areas and ensure that we develop our product to create slight overlaps rather than gaps.

This Product Manager provides spaces, equipment, environment, and training that facilitate teaching and learning.  Designed based upon the pedagogical needs of the faculty. Usually but not always synchronous.  For many students and courses these spaces are where the core teaching and learning mission of the university happens.
