The IT department for the Baskin School of Engineering (BSoE) is responsible for designing, maintaining and troubleshooting the complex systems that drive the applied mathematics, biomolecular engineering, computational media, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering and statistics departments for UC Santa Cruz. It is a challenging and fast environment where we support faculty, staff and students who are doing cutting edge research. We're looking for a new team member who will enjoy the challenge of supporting the BSOE mission and the diverse technologies that it requires.

The employee shall agree to allow the University to assess safety and security of the remote workplace, to ensure that the designated work space is safe and free from hazards and to maintain, repair, inspect, or retrieve University-owned equipment.

Job Overview

This position is responsible for Development Operations (DevOps) systems administration including design, implementation, maintenance and monitoring of enterprise level systems. A successful person in this role applies advanced systems infrastructure concepts and institutional objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Analyzes situations or data that requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Creates and advocates for good development practices for multiple systems. Evaluates potential new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost / benefit analyses.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $73,700 - $89,945/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
40% -
  • Applies advanced systems / infrastructure concepts to define, design and implement highly complex systems, services and technology solutions. Areas of focus include but are not limited to DevOps and automating team processes.
  • Proposes and implements highly complex system or device enhancements such as software, hardware and network configuration, updates and installations for projects or services of broad scope.

40% -
  • Independently manages systems and services for the Baskin School of Engineering (BSoE) and makes recommendations for purchases or upgrades.
  • Performs complex and advanced analysis to acquire, install, modify and support operating systems, software, databases, utilities and web-related tools.
  • Selects methods and techniques to obtain solutions. 
  • Interacts with senior management. 
  • May perform complex network integration tasks and interoperability assessments for interconnected servers or components of clusters for communication.

15% -
  • Specifies, writes and executes highly complex software and scripts to support systems management, log analysis and other system administration duties for multiple, highly integrated systems.

5% -
  • Maintains complex security systems. 
  • Interprets and adopts campus, medical center or Office of the President, system and regulation-based security policies to control access to networked resources. 
  • Provides recommendations and requirements on network access controls.

ITS Security Statement
Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.
