Job Overview

The BSOE Services Administrator plays an essential role in the delivery of services to BSOE faculty, staff and students. The BSOE relies heavily on Linux and FreeBSD for a fleet of web servers currently hosting approximately 1000 web sites for faculty, graduate students, labs and research groups.  These servers also host a variety of applications, such as ZFS, NFS and samba (for file access), OpenLDAP, and SQLlite databases. The position works closely with the BSOE Divisional Liaison/Computing Director to understand the division's web hosting and file access requirements, and to plan, coordinate, and manage the delivery of hardware, software and services to meet those needs. Successful candidates will demonstrate both breadth and depth in expertise related to Linux system administration and complex web hosting systems.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $73,700 - $90,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
45% -
  • Manages multiple Linux / UNIX web servers hosting individual to 100+ websites each.  Manages apache configurations, security updates, SSL certificates, access controls with Chef configuration management code.  Provides support to other IT staff and end users for these systems.

15% -
  • Manages Samba and OpenLDAP servers and respective configurations.  Provides patching and application configuration.  Installs new systems as needed.  Provides support to other IT staff for these systems.

15% -
  • Writes and executes complex scripts / Chef configuration management code and may write software in support of systems management, log analysis and other system administration duties for multiple integrated systems.

10% -
  • Works with BSOE Web Developer on Drupal configurations and patches.  Assist with low-level content updates and scripts.

10% -
  • Performs miscellaneous tasks as assigned.

5% -
  • Documents all procedures and tasks.

ITS Security Statement

Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Significant Linux systems administration experience, including ability to analyze, monitor and tune system performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly technical team with both technical clients and non-technical users.
  • Experience writing Chef configuration management code.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant web server administration experience, including the use of certificates, file sharing, and NFS.
  • Significant Samba and OpenLDAP administration experience.
  • Significant shell scripting experience (bash, sh, Ruby, PHP, etc).
  • Demonstrated experience with Drupal.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Excellent technical documentation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing servers.
  • FreeBSD administration experience.
  • Lean 6 Sigma.
  • Agile and/or Scrum Related Certifications.
