General summary/purpose:
The Software Engineer is responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance, performance, production support and documentation of user interfaces and software at the Sheridan Libraries including the Roman de la Rose digital library, the Archaeology of Reading, Digital Library of Medieval Manuscripts and other digital humanities collections and projects. This includes but is not limited to the installation, modification, and testing of new and/or upgraded applications (packages or home grown), operating systems, file structures, hardware, communication devices, and productivity tools. Applies analysis techniques and procedures to gather and then translate business requirements into functional/technical specifications and designs. Using functional specifications and designs, produces all or part of the deliverables. Maintains databases and application system code.

Works closely with Senior Software Engineers, Project Manager and Hodson Director of the Digital Research and Curation Center (DRCC).

Works closely with Senior Software Engineers, Project Manager and Hodson Director of the Digital Research and Curation Center (DRCC) who will set priorities and direction for this role.

Specific duties & responsibilities:
Position will work with open-source software based on the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) with enhancements or modifications based on requirements from a project funded by the Andew W. Mellon Foundation. This software supports a range of scholars, primarily from the humanities who use the digital resources of the Digital Library of Medieval Manuscripts, Archaeology of Reading and the Perseus Digital Library. Position will also have to work with external teams that have developed similar technology.
The complexity of the role arises from the interaction of multiple technology platforms that will be aligned to support a common data model. In addition to modifying community-based open-source software, the position will also have to work with a locally developed platform (Reveal) and software developed by other teams (e.g., T-Pen, Digital Mappa).

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT:
  • Develop detailed tasks by analyzing project scope and milestones for complex projects in order to ensure product is delivered in a timely fashion according to software lifecycle standards.
  • Develop/change data input, files/database structures, data transformation, algorithms, and data output by using appropriate computer language/tools to provide technical solutions for complex application development tasks.
  • Document code and associated processes by adhering to development methodologies, adding code comments and appropriate documentation to various knowledge-base system(s) to simplify code maintenance and to improve support.
  • Provide thought leadership in designing and developing innovative integrated solutions.

    TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION:
  • Create and document complex test scenarios using the appropriate testing tools to validate and verify application functionality.
  • Test all changes by using the appropriate complex test scenarios to ensure all delivered solutions work as expected and errors are handling in a meaningful way.
  • Author and maintain documentation by writing audience-appropriate materials to serve as technical and/or end-user references.

    IMPLEMENTATION AND MAINTENANCE:
  • Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project to communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
  • Monitor changes and resolve complex problems by responding as they occur, by reviewing all processing and output of the newly implemented solution, and by proactively ensuring the solution works successfully in order to satisfy the customer requirements and to provide a smooth transition to the new solution.
  • Provide support by investigating and resolving issues, including complex issues to ensure prompt, effective service.

    Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

    Bachelor's degree required. Five years of related work experience with computer systems and applications including:
  • Strong web development skills including JavaScript, HTML 5 and other core web technologies.
  • Experience with REST web services
  • Experience with JSON-LD, XML and Git.
  • Deep understanding of the HTML DOM (Document Object Model), CSS, layout, browser compatibility.
  • Deep understanding of Model-View-Controller paradigm/design pattern, and implementing such.
  • Experience with a UI platform/framework.
  • Experience with Solr/Lucene.
  • Experience using Maven for project build and management.
  • Collaborative and creative approach to problem solving.

    Preferred qualifications:
  • Understanding of or familiarity with IIIF.
  • Experience with JQuery.
  • Familiarity with Java.
  • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails.
  • Understanding of RDF.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Experience with Node.js.

    Additional experience may be substituted for education and additional education may substitute for experience as permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
