Network Engineer

Overview
Installs, maintains and evaluates network systems and communications. Troubleshoots the most complex network issues. Conducts research and analysis regarding new technology, network traffic, potential security risks, etc. Leads the network architecture design and optimization. Responsible for planning and achieving implementation project goals and objectives. Gives input into developing the budget. Advises and directs work teams, providing a leadership role for the work group through deep knowledge of networking.

Responsibilities
Administer network, communication and computing infrastructure including equipment and software, and maintain related documentation
Install, configure and maintain data network and communications equipment and services, including, but not limited to, routers, switches, firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, network access control systems, wireless networking controllers and access points, telephony systems and, as required, CCTV/CATV equipment
Administer computing infrastructure including servers, storage systems and related equipment and software
Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge of the enterprise network and communications infrastructure in use at the university
Perform assigned operational tasks in an accurate, timely and efficient manner
Take appropriate, timely action to resolve network, communications and computing infrastructure problems when they occur
Configure and maintain network software services for the university, including network address assignment and name resolution
Implement and maintain procedures or software to enhance and/or automate network and communications administration tasks; document programs and procedures; ensure that automated tasks perform correctly
Monitor and maintain the integrity and security of network, systems and data; plan and implement changes to avert problems
Monitor, analyze and report on utilization and performance trends of the data network and related equipment, identify potential performance or capacity problems, plan and implement changes to avert problems
Maintain inventory and documentation of equipment and software, including specifications, configuration, diagrams, connections, licensing, product lifecycle and maintenance information
Keep procedural, configuration and inventory documentation updated and accurate
Coordinate with external vendors to resolve technical problems

Plan and implement new or upgraded network and communication infrastructure equipment or related software
Design and develop plans to enhance the network and communications infrastructure; research products and establish technical requirements; define project scope, requirements, and deliverables, and develop a project plan to meet objectives
Coordinate project activities, including performing assigned tasks and coordinating with external providers or contractors, ensuring project remains on schedule and that work accomplished meets specifications
Ensure appropriate documentation, including configuration settings, is written and maintained
Perform or oversee technical testing and migration to the production environment of new or enhanced systems and services, ensuring minimal disruption to current operations
Ensure rigorous application of information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of network and communications services
Develop network, communications and computer-related contingency plans and disaster recovery procedures
Investigate and report on feasibility of new technology as it pertains to the University's network and communications environment

Provide technical support , in a pleasant, professional and courteous manner
Process assigned service request tickets according to established procedures and SLAs
Analyze systems malfunctions, and implement necessary corrective actions, in an accurate, timely and efficient manner
Provide technical support for other Technology Services departments and groups, including the Service Desk, as required
Serve as technical liaison to non-University vendors or technical organizations as required

Other administrative duties
Work independently or in teams to carry out assignments within the framework established by the supervisor and in conformance with established practices and procedures; bring unexpected or controversial findings to the supervisor's attention
Provide regular progress and status reports to the supervisor
Create and present written or oral briefings
Cross train staff in infrastructure technologies as required
Participate in Technology and Communications Infrastructure group meetings and activities
Participate in interdepartmental Technology Services meetings and project teams as directed, including representing the Technology and Communications Infrastructure group in Change Control and Operations Quality Review meetings
Follow CUA and Technology Services staff guidelines and requirements
Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree with ten (10) years' experience administering recent-version enterprise-class Cisco switches, routers, firewalls and wireless controllers. Five (5) years' materially demonstrated success in designing and implementing network and communications infrastructure in a large campus environment. Three (3) to five (5) years' experience in edge router configuration and BGP routing protocol administration.
Master's degree preferred. Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) required.
