Job Overview

Under the general direction of the University Library Divisional Liaison, the Library Technologies Application Programmer will play a key role in developing, enhancing and optimizing the Library's enterprise systems.  Primarily, the Library Applications programmer develops applications and services including designing, writing, modifying, testing, debugging and maintaining source code for the Samvera-based library digital asset management system (DAMS).   DAMS is a Rails application based on the Hyrax gem as part of the Samvera project. With Solr and Fedora it is meant to be used as a repository and access point for some of UCSC's digital collections. A basic Hyrax installation has been customized with our own metadata schema, styling, and some features that are specific to our institution. 

Additionally, the Library Technologies Application Programmer will be responsible for providing the programming and technical expertise needed for the development, integration, and support of a wide array of library systems, applications, and services. The incumbent will help analyze, design and implement library serving systems infrastructures and user interfaces; will explore new technologies to identify opportunities for effective application, including the potential integration with other university and library systems; and will develop custom library applications that enhance and create efficiencies within library operations for library patrons and back-end functions. The incumbent will also assist with all aspects of maintenance and administration of library services and applications; will provide technical assistance for all forms of information technology used by the library to meet its mission, goals, and objectives; and will participate in the development and assessment of a broad range of library technology initiatives and plans.

100% Remote Work Site will be considered.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $70,000 - $85,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties
40% -
  • Supports, develops, establishes and maintains integration points while working within the evolving landscape of the Library Digital Asset Management System (DAMS) and ancillary systems. 
  • Applies campus and industry principles, standards, and best practices to perform complex analyses in support of the DAMS service. 
  • Provides and executes strategic technical direction to continuously improve and refine the user experience and supporting administrative work-flows.

20% -
  • Plans, designs, develop, modify, debugs, deploys and evaluates complex software for functional areas. 
  • Analyzes existing software or works to formulate logic for new complex systems and devises complex algorithms. Performs complex data analysis and tests.

10% -
  • Representing Library IT services, partners with campus, industry and systemwide entities such as the California Digital Library in support of library services. 
  • Utilizing Library concepts and best practices, facilitates library strategic and service evolution. 
  • Utilizes expertise and collaborates with professional community and associated peer groups.

10% -
  • Negotiates, develops and executes moderately complex test plans.
  • Develops conversion and system implementation plans. 
  • Trains users in conversion and implementation of system(s). 
  • Performs complex data modeling, performance and integration testing and builds interfaces for a variety of internal and external constituents. 
  • Monitors and employs source code control techniques and configuration management.

  • Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes recommendations for approval of system and programming documentation. 
  • Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and system standards. 
  • Negotiates with stakeholders on the creation of software specifications. 
  • Manage supporting projects of small to moderate in size utilizing a formal project management methodology. 
  • Ensures project reports are made. 
  • Trains users in conversion and implementation of systems. 
  • Negotiates project plans with stakeholders.

  • Employs common IT Project Management and IT Service Management methodologies, including process integration, process flows, and coordination with ITS tools and practices.

ITS Security Statement
Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience with library service delivery, workflows and supporting technologies.
  • Intermediate knowledge of secure software development.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the following technologies:
    •  Ruby programming language
    •  Ruby on Rails
    •  Solr
    •  Fedora
    •  PHP
  • Experience with Web standards and scripting using HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript,Python or JQuery.
  • Experience utilizing APIs and web services to search and interact with third-party systems.
  • Experience managing small to medium sized projects in a leadership capacity.
  • Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Thorough experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
  • Experience with continuous integration tools (e.g. Jenkins or TravisCI).
  • Experience managing a software repository, preferably using Github.
  • Experience with automated software testing (using spec, capybara, and coveralls or similar tools).
  • Thorough experience with common programming tools. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of electronic accessibility standards to provide access for individuals with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology security functions and practices.
