The Faculty Instructional Technology Center (FITC) provides enterprise solutions and support for the
creation, delivery, and management of instruction in person, online, and in mixed modalities. The FITC is a
primary resource for instructional designers, instructional technologists, faculty, and staff seeking solutions to
achieve instructional goals.

The FITC provides service management and support for the campus LMS (Canvas) and related third-party
applications, the campus media storage and serving service (YuJa), the use of Zoom for instruction, the
campus Student Experience of Teaching Surveys service (Blue), accessible instructional technology, and
management of media creation and editing studios, faculty lab, and active learning classrooms.

Position Summary

This position requires an interdisciplinary approach involving many areas of information and instructional technologies and user experience.  Applies professional concepts, department/unit and campus/OP policies and procedures to resolve a variety of complex issues related to instruction. Applies knowledge of instructional best practices to provide faculty support and technical support for UC Santa Cruz' enterprise collaborative learning environments. 

This position is functionally aligned with the ITS Experience unit. As such,  the position will be responsible for providing UX design feedback to the instructional tools team and may participate in larger UX improvement processes in ITS as they relate to instruction. This unit may also provide UX review of instructional resources not managed by the tools teams, such as custom faculty created tools, or tools that faculty may employ in the service of instruction.

Assists instructional designers and instructors in applying technical solutions to achieve learning goals. Technical professional with knowledge in the overall fields of software applications, enterprise solutions and instructional technology and recognized expertise in specific areas, including learning management solutions, webcasting, distance learning, student engagement tools, media production, and accessible technologies. 

This position will support Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integrations as well as Application Programming Interface (API) with Canvas and applications such as Google Education Suite. In collaboration with the Tools Team, interfacing with vendors of instructional tools for instructor support or other user issues that may arise. Documentation for use of all instructional tools adopted by UC Santa Cruz. 

This position requires advanced knowledge of teaching tools adopted by UCSC, those commonly used by universities, as well as emerging tools. Ability to recommend audio and visual equipment, to set it up, and to test it (including teaching instructors on how to use it, and troubleshooting). This position will be an expert in Canvas, and will support for routine tasks in Canvas such as Quiz creation, People management, placement of assets such the OE Week Zero module or the Course Design Template; extensive support and training for the technical aspects of teaching with Zoom (e.g., pre-loading breakout rooms, using new features such as High Fidelity Audio or slide-based virtual backgrounds); engagement in training with UCSC Online Education on the use of instructional tools; some light editing of media, and definitely knowledge of tools like Camtasia and Screenflow. 

The person in this role provides direct support to faculty, staff and students for instructional technology including, but not limited to, learning management systems such as Canvas, online proctoring solutions, video-conferencing, video and audio streaming services, file sharing, and collaboration tools.

This position is responsible for the technical aspects of the delivery of online, blended, and technology-enhanced courses. You will routinely engage in the following tasks in support of those courses: Troubleshoots issues with technology, both hardware and software, for instructors, students, and staff; tests and maintains technology systems necessary to the delivery these courses. Evaluates, recommends and implements new instructional technologies; and, assists with developing, maintaining, and updating training materials and resources in various delivery modalities.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary Information: $70,000-$85,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and
experience.

Job Duties
40%- Direct Faculty Support
Provides direct faculty consulting services including response to tickets related to the LMS (Canvas) or other
instructional tools (such as YuJa, Gradescope, Hypothes.is), daily drop in hours, support via email or other
communication tools (e.g., Slack)

25%- User Experience
Participate in the UX team stand-ups and be a subject matter expert for UX design for instructional tools.
Maintain an understanding of accessibility standards anda apply those standards consistently.

20%- Instructional Support Community of Practice
Work with the Instructional Tools team, UCSC Online Education, Center for Innovations in Teaching and
Learning, and Divisional LITS as part of a community focused on the common goal of supporting the
instructional mission of the campus. This may involve participation in Slack, daily standups, attending or
presenting at routine community knowledge sharing events.

10%- Professional Development
Engage in continual self improvement through the community of practice and more formal professional
development opportunities.

5%- Additional Support
As needed, provides secondary support for the Active Learning Classrooms, media studios, and lab facilities.

0%- ITS Security Statement
Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT
Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and
standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications.
Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and
complete all appropriate and required security training.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT.
  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent/related functions.

  • Experience with standard Productivity tools, including PowerPoint, Keynote, Word, Excel.
  • Ability to create training programs, including workshop development and delivery.
