Department Summary
Information Services (IS) is the central information technology unit for the University of Oregon. IS provides and supports campus-wide services in the areas of technology support, enterprise applications, middleware, database administration, information security, systems and operations, and data networking and telecommunications. IS also includes the Advanced Network Technology Center and works closely with the Network for Education and Research in Oregon.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Data Center Infrastructure, the Infrastructure Engineer will be a member of the Enterprise Systems group, responsible for the engineering and administration of enterprise storage and virtualization systems.

This Infrastructure Engineer will provide leadership, direction, and coordination, in the administration of data center infrastructure. Infrastructure to encompass network applications, backup and data protection, storage, and virtualization. This position requires detail-oriented, analytical, and strong interpersonal communication skills. This position will work independently the majority of the time with broad direction given from management. This position will need to coordinate team resources to organize complex technical projects.

This Infrastructure Engineer will possess in-depth and comprehensive knowledge of cloud technology and virtualization. This position will engineer and design work processes for other staff. This position will perform research and make recommendations based on assessments of operational issues and anticipated future needs. This position will take responsibility and ownership of enterprise infrastructure. This position will develop work processes, maintenance plans, training, communication plans. This position will analyze service efficiency, performance, cost-benefit. This Infrastructure Engineer will serve as project lead for incidents and problems affecting multiple systems. This position will serve as escalation point for other Data Center Infrastructure team members. This position will communicate daily with students, staff, faculty, vendors, and community members on a daily basis via email, phone, and in-person contact. This position will also proactively monitor and evaluate customer needs and propose solutions.

The Infrastructure Engineer will participate in both formal and informal procurement and other decision making with financial implications. The position will have minimal budget authority but will recommend proactive upgrades and system replacements based on assessments of operational issues and anticipated future needs. This position will be essential in independently analyzing campus level IT problems and developing proactive approaches to ensuring reliable services. They will also serve as a team leader for an incident response process.

This position reports to the Manager of Data Center Infrastructure. Work will be reviewed informally on a weekly basis through in person meetings and work tracking systems. Annual formal reviews to evaluate performance and accomplishments will be conducted according to the SEIU collective bargaining agreement.

This Infrastructure Engineer will perform duties within department and/or OR-OSHA guidelines and training stipulations and may be required to use any applicable safety equipment. This position is expected to perform duties in accordance with current industry best practices and standards and OUS/UO policies and procedures, as well as in compliance with Federal, State, and local laws, and will take steps to ensure all technical solutions are compliant with industry guidelines, administrative rules and regulations, and local, state, and federal laws.

The position may function as an incident first responder or as part of an emergency response team in the case of a campus emergency and may be required to report during a campus emergency.

This position is eligible for remote, hybrid, and/or in-person.
Minimum Requirements
  • This classification requires a basic foundation of knowledge in operating systems programs, maintenance, systems administration, and network systems that would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science, engineering mathematics, telecommunications or a related technical field; or equivalent technical training and/or experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience typically gained through 2-6 years of enterprise application and/or systems administration experience.
  • Advanced experience working on a team of technical staff.
  • Five years' experience VMware systems administration experience in a production environment with demonstrated increasing responsibility.
  • Five years' experience application administration experience with primary responsibilities to maintain critical applications and infrastructure (can be simultaneous with systems administration).
  • Strong foundation of knowledge in Systems and Infrastructure Administration principles, including but not limited to systems automation, change management, capacity planning and documentation.
  • Experience with technology implementation projects on an enterprise-wide scale.
  • Experience providing high-availability services to enterprise clients.
  • Experience with Puppet and SCCM configuration management systems.
  • Knowledge of authentication integration via Active Directory.
  • Experience participating in large scale computing initiatives.
  • Experience working in a cloud environment (Azure, AWS, etc.).
  • Experience with F5s or other High Availability Load Balancers.
  • Experience managing and migrating Netapp Data On Tap systems.
  • Experience with common project management concepts and practices.
  • Experience with change management and incident management concepts and practices.
