Job Overview

The Experience Design Manager will have a deep functional understanding of all experience design practices, skills, and roles. They will provide strategic and operational direction to lead the research, architecture, and design of complex experiences, services, products, and content. The incumbent will manage, mentor, and develop a team of design practitioners, in addition to engaging in high to mid-level design work directly, the incumbent will work closely with product managers and other staff to effectively apply DesignOps best practices--including planning, estimation, and resource allocation.

It is negotiable for this position to work remotely up to 100%.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $100,300 - $125,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

  • Develops experience design strategies, including quarterly goals and key metrics. Develops, plans, and directs staff implementation of design research, information architecture, web and interaction design, service design, and content strategy, and includes creative facilitation, project planning, and effort estimation.

  • Defines and champions design systems, processes, and operating procedures to advance user-centered design and support divisional objectives, and to comply with regulations and institutional policies.

  • Serves as an expert level experience design practitioner in performing highly complex experience design activities.

  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, promoting, managing conduct and performance, assigning, rewarding, transferring, suspending, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of subordinate staff.

  • Serves as a liaison representing the interests of the unit to university and divisional leadership regarding experience design operations and functions.

5%
  • Creates and monitors the budget and approves expenditures.

ITS Security Statement
Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of user experience design theories, concepts, and methodologies sufficient for strategic planning, project coordination, staff direction, and in the completion of assignments.
  • Applied expertise in at least two core experience design competencies-user research, information architecture, visual design, interaction design, design process management, analytics & measurement, service design, copywriting and content strategy, design facilitation, or other.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing, mentoring, and/or developing professional design staff.
  • Ability to make and guide effective decisions, explaining clearly how the decision has been reached and demonstrating understanding of complexity and risks.
  • Experienced in running collaborative design activities, influencing others, and building consensus.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively present complex topics to individuals and groups with potentially varied levels of familiarity.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a related area.
  • Typically 2-5 years of experience managing or leading design teams.
  • Experienced in balancing product, development, and user-centered goals to help shape overall product / service strategy.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of agile design and delivery principles.
  • User Experience / Information Architecture / Design Research / Content Strategy / Analytics.
  • Agile.
  • Lean / Six Sigma.
