  • Position Summary:
    The focus of this position is planning, implementing, and maintaining the University of Alaska Data Warehouse, in coordination with other data warehousing staff. The data warehouse supports the institutional reporting needs of the entire University of Alaska system in liaison between the offices of IT and IR. Priorities for the warehouse are set in collaboration with the University of Alaska Institutional Research Shared Services Council (IRSSC). This position is eligible for distance, remote work, and work from home, however, preference may be given to Alaska Residents. Occasional travel for visits to campus may be required. The successful candidate will be excited about data and data quality, committed to the maintenance of the data warehouse and exhibit the ability to assist in the development of a new, updated, and more efficient data warehouse ecosystem. As part of the data warehouse team, the successful candidate will help build custom data definitions, functions and tables, create/maintain/fine-tune Extract Transform and Load (ETL) processes in support of the University mission and business requirements as defined by the IRSSC.

    Duties:
    1-60Data Warehousing: Coordinate with IRSSC and other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to understand data requirements and knowledge of University of Alaska operations across the four entities. Define, design and maintain a well integrated enterprise data warehouse, including data models, databases, ETL processes. Manage associated access, metadata, data quality, data governance and other components that meet present and future institutional data needs of the University of Alaska system. Audit the data warehouse regularly to maintain data quality. Apply best practices in data warehousing while working both independently and collaboratively.Essential 2-30Documentation & Data Governance: Ensure transparent processes are utilized with clear documentation for technical and non-technical users. Create and implement standards to ensure data access and use align with data sharing agreements, BOR policy, university regulation, and state and federal laws for the University system. Collaborate with IRSSC and other SMEs to establish timely audits of UA information from all university administrative databases and external information, such as the State of Alaska budget information system. Maintain the common, official, system-wide reporting definition standards for use in internal and external reporting. Transparently document time- and task-management and effectively communicate with technical and non-technical users.Essential 3-10Other Duties: Maintain knowledge of current and new methods and technologies that relate to data warehousing, data preparation ETL/ELT practices and automation of tasks. Participate and assist in projects such as the Data Warehouse Improvement/Data Governance project. Perform other duties as assigned.Essential

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    The ideal candidate will be highly motivated to apply their strong analytical and problem-solving skills on a variety of duties, including:
    • Experience in working with enterprise database warehouse environments using common software industry practices in a higher education setting.
    • Strong programming and scripting skills to identify and manipulate data from a variety of sources and reconstitute it to produce vetted, official datasets for historical and consistent use.
    • Experience troubleshooting data issues from the quirky to complex - to diagnose potential errors, to write corrective code, and collaborate to develop options and address solutions in a controlled and transparent way.
    • Experience loading, transforming, auditing and reconciling data in an Oracle SQL, PL/SQL environment.
    • Experience and comfort working in a Linux environment.
    • Experience with various ways to maintain code version control in github or using other version control methods.
    • Experience documenting work efforts, collaborating on closely shared tasks, and responding to ticket style request items in time- or task-management tools such as Jira, Microsoft Planner, Github.
    • Training or experience using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) program language and interpreting and writing SAS code would be a plus.


    Typical Experience:
    Minimum 3 years data warehousing experience, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Required Education or Training:
    Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Data Analysis, Data/Information Management, Database/Data Management or similar equivalent.

    This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 80, based on education and experience.
